Four years old. I had to tell everybody that is was an archaeopteryx costume, because I was fed up of having to explain that it was one of these: [link] (old art! visit at own risk!)
This was my first effort at a costume that was more than a tail, some claws, and a pair of ears (lol, furry). These pictures were taken about a month after I had completed the costume, at a local fair where I handed out leaflets promoting the place that I made the costume at, the Tülab (where I now work). It was UNBELIEVABLY HOT in that headpiece, even though it was just made of plastic, cardboard, and a bit of cloth. I suffer in heat at the best of times, but that was awful (I have a high tolerance for cold though). It was a lot of fun slinking around and hissing at people, especially with those big wings that were about 2.5m (8 feet). People leaned back in surprise whenever I opened them wide.
Costume wings were made of carboard feathers with a single bamboo pole for me to hold, cloth sleeves, and a string to hold all the feathers together and make them open properly. The tail is sponge and plastic feathers (they were pretty lethal, won't do that again without sanding them first). The head has real feathers, and is basically made of card with a plastic mask inside as the base. And everywhere lots of elastic.
The picture in the middle makes me lol. OMG I R DYIN HERE.
Hmmm, I'm not quite sure I remember now, but I think it was just a couple of stitches? It needed to be a flexible join, to allow the feathers to extend and collapse. I think a couple ripped through the stitching, and I got annoyed and stapled them. xD
